Teachers union declares two-hour strike

The teachers' union POED voted to go on a two-hour strike

THE teachers union POED has declared a two-hour strike for December 11 to protest the ministry of education’s plans to reform the teacher appointment system.

Permanent primary, kindergarten and special education teachers will take part in the strike.

POED said that this is the first of a series of measures to express frustration with the fact that the ministry’s positions regarding the teacher appointment reform appeared vague and contradictory during a recent meeting.

In addition, POED is unhappy with the ministry’s refusal to exclude contract teachers from the appointment reform.

The reform will be implemented by 2015 and will be the first step to change the current state of a waiting list, whereby candidates are selected for appointment based on the seniority on that list, and not on merit

Teachers’ unions believe that the reform is unfair to contract teachers, who should be included on the government’s permanent payroll before it proceeds with further appointments.
