AEL and Ermis join Apollon on top of league

By Nemanja Bjedov

Orlando Sa’s second half brace helped AEL beat rock bottom Alki 3-0 at the Tsirion Stadium in Limassol and Ivaylo Petev’s men are now on top of the league with 24 points, sharing the same number of points as Ermis Aradippou and Apollon, who also have a game in hand, but ahead of them on a better head-to-head record.

“We played very well today and throughout the match we were the better side,” said Petev at the post-match press conference. “However, we have a lot of work ahead of us and we have to stay down to earth. I am satisfied with my players’ approach to this match and their overall performance.”

AEL’s Portuguese striker Sa is now level at the top of the scorers’ list with Anorthosis’ Roberto Colautti, as they both netted eight league goals this season.

“I would like to thank our fans for their tremendous support, and wish Alki all the best in the remainder of the season,” Petev added.

Meanwhile, Ermis Aradippou played out a highly entertaining 3-3 draw against Aris in Limassol, with Nigerian forward Marco Tagbajumi scoring a hat-trick for the visitors, who gambled away a 3-1 lead in the final 15 minutes of the game to throw away two points.

“It was an exciting game. We started the game very well and, as we scored early on, we had the upper hand for most of the proceedings,” assessed Ermis coach Nicos Panayiotou.

“Aris are a very good team and clearly we had a difficult task. Unfortunately our focus dropped as we thought the game was over when we took a 3-1 lead. However, they showed they had enough quality to get back to level terms,” admitted Panayiotou.

“I would like to congratulate my players on their effort and, despite losing two valuable points, I am proud of them and their performance,” he added.

Elsewhere in Round 11, Omonia celebrated a 2-1 victory against Ethnikos Achnas away from home, and Toni Savevski’s men are now fourth overall, with only one point behind the leading trio. Anorthosis trail them by two points after a convincing 3-0 victory away to Nea Salamina.

Enosis Neon Paralimni recorded their first victory of the season after overcoming Doxa Katokopia 1-0, with Marios Zannetou hitting the winner five minutes into injury time.

In the final two matches of Round 11 on Monday night, APOEL host AEK Kouklion at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia, while Apollon visit AEK Larnaca.
