Woman arrested for hit and run (Updated)

A 54-year old woman from Bulgaria was arrested on Wednesday afternoon, in connection with the death of a 22-year old cyclist on Sunday.

The police located the woman after a car registered in her name was located in Paralimni. The 54-year-old was found and arrested in Nicosia.

Police, acting on a tip-off, were directed towards an abandoned car parked outside an apartment complex in Paralimni. According to police, the 54-year old called a friend of hers to get it fixed after the accident.

Police searched the car and found clues indicating that it was involved in a road accident.

More specifically, according to a police source, they found a piece of cloth belonging to the 22-year old cyclist and a dent made by his head colliding with the car.

The Nicosia traffic department was notified to determine the owner of the car and a warrant was issued by the police.

She is expected to appear before the Nicosia District Court on Thursday.

According to police, the 22-year-old was riding his bike along Grigori Afxentiou Avenue in Kokkinotrimithia, in the Nicosia district, at around 6.45pm when he was hit by a car, ending up unconscious in a nearby field.

The driver fled the scene. The victim’s family called the police after the victim had failed to return home. Police found him in the field unconscious just after 8pm. He was rushed to Nicosia GeneralHospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
