Bar review: Avalon Rock & Sports Bar, Larnaca

By Andreas Vou

This month’s review takes us back to an area which is home to a number of small bars hidden between its narrow streets – Laiki Yitonia. Yet another rock-themed bar has popped up in a small backstreet of Larnaca which aims to make its own impact alongside the likes of Savino and Stone Age, which have become part of the town’s furniture over the past few decades.

Avalon Rock & Sports Bar looks to accommodate two of Cyprus youth’s favorite pastimes, music and sport. Uniquely, rather than just showing sporting events by day and host live music performances by night in the same bar, Avalon is split up into separate sections.

Rock Bar: the larger area is the rock bar, which maintains a healthy crowd throughout the week, and especially on weekends when local bands perform as well as the occasional karaoke night. The décor contains countless framed photos of old famous rockers to get you in the mood of the bar’s preferred choice of music. The lighting is dim, provided only by candles on each of the tables, all of which have a view of the main stage at the end of the establishment.

Sports Bar: a long and narrow room which is home to all the live sport one can watch can be found adjacent to the rock bar. Both foreign and local sport is broadcast here and allows those who want to focus on their team’s exploits to remain undistracted by those who want to enjoy the music. This area is also designed to house those who want to play a game of tavli (backgammon) or cards.

Food in the form of common bar snacks is now available at Avalon which saves those who would otherwise need to interrupt their attention from the game to grab a bite to eat.
The crowd in each section tends to be between late teens and mid 20s, it has become a popular alternative for those who are looking for a slightly new experience in Larnaca where the majority of bars in the area have been around for a number of years, and so far is proving a welcome addition to the Laiki Yitonia.
