Eight men were arrested in Nicosia on Tuesday in connection with a number of robberies and burglaries after they were found with jewellery and electronic items for which they were unable to provide convincing answers on how the items got to be in their possession, police said.

Police received a report at around 1.30pm that Romanian nationals were trying to sell jewellery on Ledra Street in Nicosia and had even approached a jewellery store.

Officers found five Romanians who had a large amount of jewellery on them and arrested them.

“They were unable to give satisfactory answers as to how they obtained the jewellery and were taken to Nicosia CID offices for questioning. The home of one of the men, who lives with three other Romanians, was searched and a large amount of jewellery and electronic devices were found. They were confiscated and taken as evidence,” A police spokesman said.

All eight men were arrested and held for questioning.
