EAC workers to strike over privatisations

Electricity authority (EAC) unions decided to go on strike on Monday and hold a protest outside parliament, which will be discussing a privatisation bill they oppose.

The unions will also decide on further measures, which will be announced on Friday afternoon or Saturday.

They said power production will not be affected on Monday, and the necessary personnel will be working to take care of emergencies and malfunctions.

All EAC offices will be closed.

EAC workers want their organisation exempted from privatisations, a condition included in the terms of the island’s €10 billion bailout.

The government has prepared a bill outlining the procedures, which must be passed before March 10, for the next bailout tranche of about €236 million to be released.
