Anastasiades tours Russian carrier

By Constantinos Psillides

PRESIDENT Nicos Anastasiades yesterday visited the Russian carrier Kuznetsov.

The president was accompanied by Fotis Fotiou – one of the four DIKO ministers who resigned on Friday but who have been asked to remain in their posts until March 15 – National Guard Chief Stylianos Nasis, naval commander Kyriakos Pohanis and head of the presidential office Panayiotis Antoniou. The presidential delegation was greeted by Russian Federation ambassador to Cyprus Stanislav V. Osadchiy and the ship’s captain.

Addressing the sailors, Anastasiades welcomed them to the island. “You are welcomed because you are friends of ours, but also because with the power and the capabilities that this big aircraft carrier-cruiser has, as well as your mission to destroy chemical weapons, you safeguard peace at the same time. Welcome to a country that is a friend,” the president said.

Anastasiades took a tour of the carrier and had a brief meeting with the officers.

Responding to a journalist’s remark, the president responded that Cyprus and Russia are expected to conclude agreements both on defence and other sectors, while, at the same time, preparations were being made for a meeting between him and his Russian counterpart in the near future.
