Arrest of suspected arsonist

A man was arrested on Monday on suspicion of arson, attempted arson and issuing threats, a police report said.

According to the police statement, while Larnaca CID police officers were on patrol around 4.15 am on Monday, they spotted two people in a car moving suspiciously in the parking lot of a betting shop.

As soon as the driver became aware of the presence of police, he sped up in an effort to leave the scene, only to be cut off by the patrolling officers.

During questioning, he was identified as a 37-year-old from Nicosia, but when asked about the reasons for being in the area, he declined to answer and the driver accelerated the car towards the officers before turning the car around and fleeing the scene.

A person was subsequently arrested with regard to the case, who appeared to have been involved in cases of attempted arson, as well as arson, committed on February 18 and 21, respectively, in the Larnaca district, and a case of issuing threats against a company owner.

Larnaca CID continues to investigate.
