Couple arrested in Mammari with drugs and jewellery, police said

Two people were spotted moving suspiciously in a Mammari neighbourhood on Tuesday, resulting in their arrest after a car chase, a police spokesman has told the Cyprus News Agency.

According to the spokesman, a 34-year-old male and a 24-year-old female were seen loitering suspiciously in a residential area in Mammari, Nicosia.

Upon realising the presence of police officers who were called by residents, the suspects attempted to flee the scene, only to be pursued and captured with the assistance of citizens.

During the pursuit, the 34-year-old was seen getting rid of a bag and a glove, containing jewellery, in the yard of a nearby house.

A crystallised substance, believed to be a narcotic, was found on the man’s person, while the 24-year-old was caught in possession of yet more jewellery.

Further investigation in their vehicle resulted in the confiscation of two computers and other objects, for the possession of which they failed to offer convincing explanations.

The two detainees are expected to be brought before a judge on Wednesday to issue a remand.
