Soldier killed, two injured in car crash (updated)

A 20-year-old soldier was killed and two other individuals were seriously injured in a head-on car collision in Nicosia early on Thursday morning, police said.

The accident happened at around 4.30am on the Nicosia to Palehori road near Ayios Ioannis.

Police said the car driven by Charalambos Charalambous from Kalo Horio Klirou, veered off course and crashed into a vehicle coming from the opposite direction.

The 67-year-old driver of the other car and her husband, 66, were seriously injured and were being treated in hospital.

Reports said the woman was the soldier’s aunt.

The extent of the damage to the vehicles showed that the soldier was speeding, police said.

All three had been wearing their seatbelts.
