Police officer faces bribery charges

A police officer from the Paphos district was arrested on Wednesday under suspicion of bribery, according to the police report.

The police officer was reported by a betting shop owner, who told investigators that he was bribing the officer to not raid his shop when conducting anti-gambling sweeps.

According to the report, the betting shop owner claimed that in 2013 he paid the officer €6,200 to either exclude his shop from the raids or notify him beforehand.

The officer was under suspicion for the crime for some time so he was transferred to a rural police station in the Paphos district, the report said.

The officer has been suspended. He is facing investigation for bribery of a public servant and abusing authority.
