Robber tracked by off-duty officer

A robber was arrested on Thursday thanks to an off-duty female police officer who followed him through the streets of Limassol.

Police said the man, a 39-year-old from Greece, had just robbed a Polemidhia area bakery at 2.30am using what later proved to be a fake pistol.

He made off in a car with the €380 he just stole but he was noticed by the officer who was returning home after finishing her shift.

“She followed the perpetrator and at the same time notified the duty officer to send help,” Limassol CID chief Ioannis Soteriades said.

At some stage the thief realised he was being followed and tried to escape. His car came to a halt in the Garyllis riverbed and he tried to flee on foot but was caught by police officers guided to the scene by their colleague.

The man was remanded in custody for eight days. Police said he has admitted robbing the bakery, as well as a convenience store. Authorities suspect he could be involved in four other convenience store robberies that took place in Limassol recently.
