Green Party warns of illegal tree cutting for Easter bonfires

The Green Party on Monday said it had begun receiving “alarming  information” about the illegal cutting down of trees and the stealing of timber in preparation for Easter bonfires or ‘lambradjia’.

“We urge local authorities and the police to remain vigilant and to increase their patrols,” the party said.

The traditional bonfire on Easter Saturday centres on the burning of Judas effigies. In recent years the custom has been getting out of control in terms of the theft of wood and any other items that can be burned on a bonfire.  Easter Sunday falls on April 20 this year.
