Two arrested in connection with explosive device

Police have arrested two men in connection with the discovery of an explosive device in a ditch that forced the closure of the Nicosia to Larnaca motorway.

The pair are suspected of being the passengers of a car that failed to stop for a police check on the motorway at 7pm on Monday.

Acting on a tip off, drug squad officers tried to stop the vehicle but its 40-year-old driver tried to flee the scene, crashing into three police cars in the process.

While chasing the vehicle, officers noticed the passenger, 43, throwing something out of the window, which later proved to be an improvised explosive device and a repeating shotgun.

Authorities shut down the area while the bomb squad destroyed the device, which was made from high explosive.

The motorway re-opened at around 11.30pm.

The suspects were caught some 500 metres down the road and the findings led authorities to believe they have prevented a criminal act.
