Red Cross: opening the doors to hope

WITH the slogan ‘Let’s all open the door to hope’ the annual Cyprus Red Cross’ yesterday officially marked this year’s door-to-door fund raiser at the organisation’s offices in Nicosia.

The islandwide door-to-door kicked off on May 5 and will end on May 23 involving all branches of the Cyprus Red Cross, including its youth wing, and hundreds of volunteers.

Present at yesterday’s ceremony were House President Yiannakis Omirou, Health Minister Philippos Paschalis, and Education Minister Costas Kadis.

Former First Lady Fotini Papadopoulou, who is president of the Cyprus Red Cross said Cypriot society was besieged by the relentless economic crisis but that charitable organisations were constantly on hand. It was a time for solidarity and altruism, she said.

Paschalis greeted the volunteers saying they set an example to society as a whole, and he wished them success in their campaign.

He said everyone’s efforts should be focused on ensuring the crisis had less of an impact as possible on vulnerable groups, and that a strong cooperation between volunteerism and the state was needed more than ever.

The door-to-door campaign is the organisation’s main source of income.
