AT the end of the Spanish La Liga decider between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, almost 100,000 fans got up off their seats to applaud the new Spanish champions, Atletico Madrid. The applauding fans were Barcelona supporters!

On the same day but a few hours earlier, two TV technicians on duty at the Cyprus championship decider between AEL and APOEL in Limassol, were hit by a flare and had to be taken to hospital before the game had begun!

An hour or so after this incident and five minutes into the second half of the game, a flare hit APOEL’s substitute bench injuring one of the players, Kaka, who had to be rushed to hospital for treatment, where he remained yesterday.
At this point the referee decided to call off the game.

This season’s ‘champions’ will be decided at a meeting of the judicial committee of the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) this coming Thursday.

Meanwhile the CFA board will convene urgently this evening to discuss ways of stemming the increasing surge of hooliganism in Cyprus. The president of the CFA has warned clubs to expect much harsher penalties if they are unable to control their fans.

Weekend results:
Group A
Ermis v Omonia 2-1 , Anorthosis v Apollon 1-1
Group B
AEK Larnaca v Doxa 6-1, Aris v Nea Salamina 1-2, Ethnikos Achnas v AEK Kouklion 5-0
