Man arrested for last Saturday’s footie trouble

APOEL defender Kaka was rushed to hospital after being hurt by a firecracker

Limassol police arrested a 25-year-old man from Ayios Nicolas in connection with hurling a firecracker, which is thought to have injured a footballer and caused a match to be abandoned.

The man is suspected of hurling a firecracker during the championship decider between Limassol’s AEL and APOEL of Nicosia at the Tsirion stadium last Saturday.

He was later remanded in custody for four days.

The game was abandoned after 51 minutes when a firecracker injured APOEL’s Brazilian defender Kaka who was sitting on the bench.

The game was goalless when it was stopped.

Its outcome will be decided today, Thursday by the football association’s judicial committee.

AEL top the standings with 81 points, three ahead of APOEL who have a better head-to-head record.
