Six fans arrested during cup win celebrations

Police arrested six people on Wednesday when fan celebrations got out of hand after the football cup final between APOEL and Ermis in Nicosia.

Two of its officers were injured during the trouble, police said.

APOEL won their 20th cup after beating the Aradhippou side 2-0 at the GSP stadium.

The Nicosia team’s supporters celebrated the win outside their club but at around 11.30pm, when most people had left, some fans started throwing stones at the police who used tear gas to disperse them.

Six people were arrested, police said, adding to the four detained before the 7pm game for possession of firecrackers.
