Restaurant review: The Old Town Grill House, Limassol

By Stephanie Robb

A new restaurant has opened its gates in Limassol’s tourist area offering a wide grill selection to customers. Ideally located, it’s a great place for a dining experience as it capitalises on what Cyprus does best: grilled dishes, and The Old Town does these dishes quite well.

The Old Town aims to do exactly what its name says, to offer a taste of the old, with a flare of the new. It is not an ambience that you often come across in Limassol and at times it feels that it has jumped out of a rustic old Mediterranean street. As a result, it has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere accompanied by waiters who will do their best to guarantee that you have a pleasant night.

The starter menu is plentiful, ranging from dips to platters and some special dishes that are not widely found. As far as the dips are concerned, what you really shouldn’t miss is the traditional Tzatziki, which is not overwhelmed by the taste of garlic, and the Greek Tyrokafteri, which is made with feta cheese and hot peppers and is quite delicious. Another great option is the Oktoberfest platter or the chorizo sausages starter. The Oktoberfest platter comes with three varieties of sausage served with a variety of mustard and is accompanied with German beer! The chorizo smoked sausages are perfect for those who love spicy food. The Julienne is also a great option, made with chicken, mushroom, onion and melted mozzarella cheese.

For the main menu, your options increase and its hard to choose a dish as there are so many on offer, including grilled pork, lamb, beef, chicken and seafood. The first thing you should look to is the Old Town Specialties. Every Saturday the restaurant serves a small whole pig, which is served beautifully and cooked to perfection. A great option, especially if you are visiting in a large group. The stuffed chicken roll is also another tasty option and you can’t go wrong with a portion of the mixed grill, made for two: lamb loin, pork ribs, beef kebab, chicken fillet, pork souvlaki and French fries. It is meat galore for those who love meat and none of the meat selections were overcooked.

Also well worth visiting for are the fish dishes, not least among which is mouthwatering sea bass. The grilling process gives the fish an amazing taste and the portion is more than appetizing. The swordfish was also great, and cooked well.

All in all, The Old Town is a great place to enjoy a nice quite family meal, with a small group or with the whole family.
