Anastasiades to attend Egyptian president’s inauguration ceremony

Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi

President Nicos Anastasiades will attend the inauguration ceremony of the new President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, on Sunday, at the invitation of the new Egyptian government.

Speaking at the presidential palace, government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said on Friday that the invitation was considered “proof of the upgraded bilateral relations between Cyprus and Egypt, and the role that the Republic of Cyprus can play in the region.”

He noted that the number of foreign leaders invited for the inauguration ceremony was extremely limited- restricted to the leaders of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, the Arab states, the country presiding the Council of the EU (Greece) and the Republic of Cyprus.
