Two arrested with sledgehammer trying to steal church collection box

Two youths, age 17 and 19 were caught red-handed trying to steal the candle collection box at the church of Ayia Paraskevi in Limassol.

According to police, on Monday evening while a member of the public was in the vicinity of the church he heard a loud noise coming from inside.

Looking in the window, he saw two people with a sledgehammer trying to break the concrete around the collection box and alerted the police.

A subsequent search of the 19-year-old’s car revealed tools that could be used in burglaries. The sledgehammer was also recovered from the scene.

The pair was arrested and will appear before the court.
