Road deaths fall over 50 per cent since 2001

Road fatalities in 2013 fell by 14 per cent compared to 2012, according to the NGO REACTION.

Cyprus ranks 5th in Europe for the period 2010–2013 in terms of road deaths, a drop of 27 per cent, REACTION said in a news release.

The organisation said that between 2001 and 2013 Cyprus recorded a drop close to 53 per cent, which was in line with the EU average for the same period.

According to REACTION president Marios Stavrou, on a European scale, Cyprus ranked in 15th place in term of fatalities.

The island ranked 8th between 2001 and 2013 on traffic injuries, recording an average drop of 6 per cent per year.

In Cyprus 407 people were seriously injured in traffic accidents in 2013 compared to 1,015 people in 2001, the release added.
