Phinikoudes beach in Larnaca will be the official site for the 14th annual under 21 international volleyball federation (FIVB) World Championship, two years after hosting the Under 19 World Championship in 2012.

The Championship will take place from July 23-27, with the participation of 224 athletes from around the world.

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Louroudjiatis said 280 matches would take place over the five-day period, while eight courts containing FIBV-approved sand will be set up for the event, to be held in memory of the late President Glafcos Clerides.

Louroudjiatis said the World Championship was expected to attract 2,500 visitors and thousands of spectators.

The opportunity to host such an international event will establish Larnaca as a city of interest for future sports events, he added. It would also be good for tourism, he said.

Larnaca will also host a number of other sport events in the summer months, including national women’s football matches, the Cyprus-Israel sailing regatta and the international cycling Sunshine Cup.
