Nicosia offers discounts to low income groups

The ministry said municipalities are collecting taxes and should resume cleaning refugee estates

LARGE families and single parents, as well as seniors and retirees will benefit from discounts on their garbage collection bills this year, the Nicosia Municipality has announced.

In a letter to the capital’s citizens, mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis said that despite the municipality’s financial constraints, it was agreed that no increases should be made in the rubbish collection bill.

Disabled people, holders of the “Person with Disability” booklet and those with annual income below €20,000 are entitled to 50 per cent discount (€79.50).
Large families are entitled to a 50 per cent discount, while families with three children can get a 15 per cent discount (€24).

Single parent families whose household income does not exceed €20,000 are entitled to a 50 per cent reduction, while single households are also entitled to a 25 per cent discount (€40).

Elderly couples over 75 with incomes below €20,000 get full exemption, or if they earn more they are allowed a 50 per cent discount.

Single seniors over 75 whose income does not exceed €10,000 get full exemption, while if they earn more, the reduction is 75 per cent (€119).

Retired couples who live off a joint pension of less than €20,000, get 50 per cent discount.

Single retirees whose pension is less than €10,000 get a 75 per cent reduction.

The last date for filling appeal is July 31 and appeal application forms can be found on the municipality’s webpage

Completed applications should be submitted to the Department of Municipal Taxes (22797020). For information contact the municipality on 22797007.

Last day of payment for the fees is the October 31, while this year the municipality is offering the option of payment by instalments (minimum instalment €30).
