A 76-year-old man, Vasilis Yiannakis, died on Thursday from injuries suffered in a car collision involving a driver who was found to be drunk.

Police said Yiannakis was driving on the Sotira to Ayia Thekla road, having his 84-year-old wife as passenger.

At some point, at around 5.30pm, a car coming from the opposite direction, driven by a 38-year-old Slovakian woman, veered into Yiannakis’ lane and slammed into his car.

The three were rushed to Famagusta hospital where Yiannakis died a few hours later.

His wife is in serious condition.

Police arrested the 38-year-old woman, whose breathalyser test showed 170 micrograms, almost eight times above the legal limit of 22.

Yiannakis became the fifth person to die in a traffic accident in less than a week.

Two teenagers were killed last Saturday in separate accidents in Nicosia, and another two, a woman,26, and a 48-year-old man, again in separate incidents in Nicosia and Limassol on Tuesday.
