Bar review: Rock City, Nicosia

By Constantinos Psillides

I was always sceptical about trendy, clean-cut rock bars. Not that I don’t enjoy the watered-down atmosphere of a friendly, inviting bar but a rock bar should be more than that.

Enter Rock City bar. Rock City – which opened only three weeks ago – is what someone might call ‘a joint’. Dim lighting, a great selection of rock and metal songs blasting through the speakers and ice cold beer flowing freely. Rock City is THE definition of a rock bar. Away from all the trendy places – it is situated opposite the PEO building in Nicosia – with dark painted walls adorned with pictures of every major rock and metal band from the 60s onwards.

And where would a good rock bar be without a pool table? Rock City has you covered there also. The pool table is next to the huge bar, which covers most of the room, providing patrons with ample seating space.
Perhaps the bar’s best characteristic is the owners. Stavros and Michalis know their stuff when it comes to rock music, making sure that lovers of good music don’t leave the bar disappointed.

Rock City doesn’t offer any food options but then again, what true rock bar does? When you get down to it, the only thing accompanying a cold beer should be the sound of James Hetfield explaining that it doesn’t matter how far apart you are from someone if you love him/her, which is the only thing that matters.
Rock City bar is open everyday except Monday from 9pm until late.
