Young mother dies after late-night swim

A young woman, 32, died on Tuesday while swimming in her home’s pool in Mesogi, Paphos.

The woman, Maria Fylachtou, the mother of a six-year-old child, along with her husband had earlier hosted a dinner party for relatives and friends.

After dinner, at around 11 pm, Fylachtou dove into the pool. Minutes later she asked her husband to help her get out of the pool but by time he did, she was already unconscious.

An ambulance rushed to the scene and transferred Fylachtou to Paphos General, where she was pronounced dead despite efforts to revive her.

The cause of death will be established following an autopsy. Preliminary reports said she had a heart condition and had not died from drowning.
