Bar review: Mare Mare, Paphos

By Bejay Browne

If cocktails and a stunning view are your thing then a visit to Mare Mare in Paphos won’t disappoint.

On Poseidonos Aveneu in Kato Paphos, this café bar offers magnificent views of the harbour and is a great place to watch the sunset with your favourite tipple and a delicious dessert.
Mare Mare is located on the first floor and the short walk up the stairs is worth it. This is a modern venue which often offers all sorts of events and live music with DJs and musicians.

However, the emphasis is always on a relaxing and chilled atmosphere.

A reasonably sized outdoor balcony space at the front offers comfortable white sofas which provide a good vantage spot to watch life on the street below. The sparkling waters of the sea are a superb backdrop.

There is also a roomy modern interior space with further seating and air conditioning which provides a cool and welcome relief from the heat of the summer.

This is a popular destination with tourists, many of whom discover it as they stroll along the harbour and seafront road, although it also has a loyal customer base of local residents.

Although the café may be initially hard to spot as it’s set slightly back from the seafront and stands apart from the row of other seaside cafes and bars, some potential clients may be put off by staff members touting for business on the street outside. Whilst Mare Mare obviously wants to encourage people to venture up the stairs, other forms of advertising would be better suited to this stylish venue.

The service here is generally good although some floor staff could be more attentive and food can be slow in coming. However, portions are large and reasonably priced for the location and the food is tasty. The bar staff are excellent and cocktails are highly recommended, although edging towards pricey. This isn’t a place to visit if you’re in a hurry, but it’s a perfect place to relax and chill out.

Wine, including sparkling, is sold by the glass and free cake – the carrot cake is very good – is offered with a coffee or juice during the afternoon.

A popular special offers board includes dishes such as avocado, prawn and feta salad, chicken and vegetable kebabs and wraps.

Mare Mare is well worth a visit, either for a romantic evening, a sundowner with friends, a full meal or light snack.

Try the Passion Fruit Daiquiri, Mai Tai or Raspberry Mojito.
