Three kilos of cocaine found in luggage (Updated)

A Brazilian national was due in Larnaca court on Thursday in connection with the smuggling of almost three kilos of cocaine.

The 23-year old was arrested at Larnaca airport on Wednesday after the drugs were found in his luggage, police said. He had flown in from Sao Paolo via Abu Dhabi.

Police said the suspect was denying involvement in the smuggling operation. Deputy Commander of the Law Enforcement Unit Stelios Sergides told the Cyprus News Agency the drug squad believes the suspect is a member of a drug trafficking ring. The cocaine, he said was intended for the domestic market.

“We will seek the assistance of Interpol and Europol to find information about the suspect and his journey and we are currently looking for possible partners in Cyprus,” he said.

Sergides said what was worrying was the increased arrival of drugs from the countries of South America, which are being brought in through stopovers in the Middle East.

The suspect arrested on Wednesday had 3.922 kg of cocaine in his luggage, Sergides said.
