Public sector unions decided to stage a general strike next Friday to protest the government’s intention to tax retirement bonuses.
The decision was taken during a broad union meeting held on Friday.
Civil servants have gone on the warpath after Finance Minister Harris Georgiades said taxing their retirement bonus was under consideration as part of the Troika-imposed economic adjustment programme.
“The issue is being considered from the perspective of ironing out existing distortions of public service reform issues, and of fiscal sustainability,” he said. “All possibilities are on the table, but no decision has been made yet.”
