A 56-year-old Russian national died on Thursday while swimming in Amathus Bay in Paphos.

According to the police, at one point the man began calling out for help. Bathers rushed to his aid and dragged him ashore.

The incident occurred late in the afternoon. The man was rushed to Paphos general hospital, but doctors there pronounced him dead on arrival.

An autopsy will be carried out on the deceased to determine the precise cause of death. The man was a permanent resident of Cyprus and was working in Paphos.

An hour later a second man swimming in the same area fell into distress, but was safely helped ashore, during a day of strong winds and rough seas.
