Nicosia gets active for Move Week

THE goal of Move Week celebrated with physical activities in 37 countries throughout Europe is to increase the number of sports active Europeans to 100 million by 2020.

Nicosians, together with their European counterparts, will have the opportunity to engage in sports activities to celebrate Move Week between September 29 and October 5.

“Today’s pace, stress and various problems that plague society, make the improvement of our living conditions more necessary than ever,” Nicosia mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis said at the presentation of next week’s events in the capital.

Yiorkadjis said that the municipality supports and promotes physical activities in general by sponsoring sports organisations and through infrastructure projects like the pedestrian and bicycle paths that run along Pedieos River and stretch from Lakatamia to the heart of the capital.

The municipality also operates a public swimming pool, a bicycle renting programme and work-out programmes offered by the municipality’s multipurpose centre.

Yiorkadjis also expressed the wish that Move Week will trigger individuals to start engaging in sports activities.

Activities will begin this afternoon with a 5km walk or run along Pedieos River. Other events include exercise programmes for seniors and free lessons for crossfit exercises in Ledra Street.
