Bar review: Kiniras hotel courtyard, Paphos

By Bejay Browne

The Kiniras hotel in Paphos is a family-run hidden treasure. It is a great place to relax in the heart of Paphos and even though it has been there for decades, new customers are discovering the venue all the time.

Kiniras is found on one of the main shopping streets of the old town a short stroll away from the old market. The venue has been operating as a hotel since the turn of the 19th century and is now run by three generations of the Gregoriou family.

At the heart of the hotel and its restaurant, the central courtyard is a haven to leisurely sip a coffee and a catch up with friends, or enjoy a romantic evening or a sundowner.

The Kiniras, the staff and its food are all quirky. Surrounded by greenery, statues and columns, a large wooden gazebo has been built in the centre of the stone paved courtyard to keep off the elements. A few other tables and chairs are dotted around.

The service here is friendly and drinks are well priced and if you feel like loosing an afternoon in peaceful surroundings, then this is the place to come.

This place is full of character and an authentic experience of Cyprus at its best. The establishment is family friendly and dedicated to Cypriot hospitality.

The wine list is adequate and spirits and other alcoholic drinks are well priced – as are soft drinks and coffees and teas. If slick, quick sycophantic service is your thing, then you won’t enjoy the Kiniras experience – there are no airs of graces here.

Instead a slightly ramshackle, absent minded service is carried out with much warmth and friendliness which manages not to be frustrating or annoying in any way.

This family loves what they do and it shows. They appreciate an empty plate or empty glass.

Whatever they are doing works, as Kiniras continues to be a popular place where both tourists and locals choose to come and eat, drink and while away the hours.

There are only a few traditional places in Paphos where you can enjoy a beverage in the heart of the hustle and bustle and this is a firm favourite.
