Road accidents will be third cause of deaths worldwide in 2020

ROAD accidents in 2020, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates, are expected to be the third cause of death and based on recent statistics, Cyprus is ranked second in the EU in relation young people killed in road accidents, Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou has said.

In his address at a press conference to mark the 15th Road Safety Week entitled “The Children show you the way”, the minister said that 33 fatal accidents were recorded so far this year, resulting in 34 dead, 14 of whom were aged up to 25 years.

Nicolaou said that these tragic statistics necessitate a general mobilisation and commitment of the entire community to the struggle to re-educate drivers and especially young drivers.
The ministry, he noted, places special emphasis on preventing road accidents and therefore the warnings/remarks system has been extended to give drivers the chance to comply with traffic rules.”
