Another woman at prison helm

ANOTHER woman has been appointed as acting director of the Central Prisons, reports said yesterday.

The new boss at the Central Prisons is police officer Anna Aristotelous, up until now an aide to justice minister Ionas Nicolaou.

Aristotelous replaces Eleni Vatiliotou, who back in January was assigned to the correctional facility on a temporary basis following a spate of inmate suicides.

Aristotelous has a LLB (Hons) from the University of Leicester, a Master of Laws in International and European Law from the University of Keele and an MBA from the University of Wales.

From November 2004 to February 2013 she served as legal consultant to four chiefs of police, and in March 2013 was assigned as adjutant officer to the justice minister.

Despite a series of corrective actions, the prison facility in Nicosia continues to face several problems, including overpopulation and low officer staffing.
