By Constantinos Psillides

A 67-year old man from Limassol died on Sunday from an apparent heart attack while hunting near Moni.

According to the police report, at around 5.45am Giorgos Papaioannou was walking with friends in a forest area near Moni when he suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to Limassol General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Papaioannou’s relatives told police that the 67-year-old had a history of heart problems.

Papaionnou was not the only casualty on Sunday, the start of the hunting season. A 22-year-old had to undergo eye surgery at Limassol General Hospital after he was injured by shotgun pellets.

According to police, he was hunting with friends at an area near Erimi village, Limassol, when he was injured.

The shooter has not yet been identified but accidents like this are a common occurrence thanks to the large numbers of hunters. According to the Game Fund, around 17,000 hunters took the fields in search for game.

To avoid injuries, hunters are required to wear orange vests and protective goggles at all times.
