Protest to condemn UDI and EEZ violations

President of the Union of Municipalities and Famagusta mayor Alexis Galanos

THE nine municipalities representing occupied towns in the north will hold a protest gathering tomorrow on the anniversary of the 1983 unilateral declaration of independence (UDI) of the breakaway ‘TRNC’.

The President of the Union of Municipalities and Famagusta mayor Alexis Galanos said yesterday that the event, which will include a cultural programme, will be held at the Strovolos municipal theatre and will be addressed by Interior minister Socratis Hasikos on behalf of President Nicos Anastasiades with House President Yiannakis Omirou as the keynote speaker.

Galanos gave a joint news conference with Kyrenia mayor Glafcos Kariolou and Kythrea mayor Petros Kareklas, during which all three condemned Turkey’s violation of the Cyprus exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

“Despite all the messages you send to the Turkish Cypriots to build a common homeland… instead, the pseudo-state, this construct, is used by Turkey as a gun pointed at Cyprus,” said Galanos.
