A minute with

A minute with Marcus Platrides Director of Etherial Jewellery and former Dolce & Gabbanna model

Where do you live?
I Live in a penthouse in Nicosia with my Dog Kal-El

Best childhood memory?
Cub Scout weekend trip to Platania in the Troodos mountain range

Most frequented restaurant?
I prefer taverns and Koutsonikolis in Larnaca is my favourite. Especially in the winter.

Absolute favourite dish?
Scorpion fish, which is my seasonal all time favourite and available only by special order.

What food would you really turn your nose up to?
Anything that has to do with animal entrails, brains, eyes, tongue and the sort of stuff that is sadly considered a delicacy among many Cypriots.

What did you have for breakfast?
Bowl of oats

Would you class yourself as a day or night person?
Day person. I can’t get any work done at night

What’s your idea of the perfect day out?
Road trip to the mountains (especially when it’s a bit chilly), lunch at some mountain tavern and then drive back home at dusk stopping at a village kafenio for coffee and traditional rice pudding. That’s heaven.

Best book ever read?
I’ve read hundreds of books through the years but my favourite is not really considered a book. It’s called Manual of the Warrior of the Light by Paulo Coelho. It is a Handbook or Manual if you prefer for those who strive to meet their destiny and who want to ascend to a higher level of being.

Favourite film of all time?
Landscape in the Mist. A World Cinema all-time classic by my good friend and mentor the late Theodore Angelopoulos. The movie portrays the journey of two children in search of their father. On the way they meet many people and encounter many dangers. Eventually, they cross a river thinking they have reached their hoped-for destination. It sums up the story of my life till now. I’ve crossed the river but when I got to the other side, it isn’t what I expected it to be.

Favorite holiday destination?
Mauii in Hawaii. I go there about twice a year to visit Haleakala National Park. I love the Serenity there. It’s the closest one can come to Heaven on Earth on the summit of the Volcano Mauna Loa 10km above sea level. Trust me.

What’s your dream trip?
I’m waiting for Richard Branson’s company Virgin Galactic to perfect its space shuttle. Space tourism is the next big thing.

What music are you listening to in the car at the moment?
Kiss Fm covers all my music needs. Really!

What is always in your fridge?
Soya Milk and Dates. I love dates!

Dream house: rural retreat or urban dwelling? Where would it be, what would it be like?
Rural retreat for sure. I imagine it built from stone at a remote location on the top of a mountain complete with a big fireplace, surrounded by forest and an amazing view. Garden complete with a Barbeque and Pine Trees. One day

If you could pick anyone at all (alive or dead) to go out for the evening with, who would it be?
Jacques Cousteau. The Father of Naval Discovery and Adventure. I grew up with his National Geographic escapades when National Geographic was available only on vhs tape and magazines. I sort of look up to him and admire his life-force. He was a free spirit like myself and I admire him a lot.

If the world is ending in 24 hours what would you do?
I’d climb the Tallest Mountain so that I could have a front-row seat in destruction. I’m sure the view would be stunning.

What is your greatest fear?
My greatest fear is that I am fearless. Fearlessness is a dangerous attribute.

Tell me a joke…
There is no greater joke in the history of modern society than the illusion of Democracy.
