Chasing pack keep up pressure on runaway leaders

By Iacovos Constantinou

The gap between the two runaway leaders and the chasing pack was reduced following the Friday night draw between Apollon and APOEL and the subsequent wins of both Ermis Aradippou and Omonia. The gap will be reduced even further (4 points off second place), if AEK Larnaca manage to overcome Ethnikos Achnas on Monday evening.

Ermis Aradippou continued their revival under Cypriot coach Nikki Papavassiliou by defeating Nea Salamina at the Ammochostos stadium.

The only goal of the game came as early as the 6th minute when de Pina headed past Strauss following Ermis’ first corner kick. The early goal allowed the visitors to control the game with Nea Salamina unable to break forward effectively.

After the break, and with the introduction of their captain Diego Leon, Nea Salamina began to control play but for all their possession they created just one clear cut opportunity. It fell to Enrique but he headed tamely straight at Ermis’ keeper Bogadinov.

Omonia were the winners in the other big weekend game when they defeated struggling AEL by two goals to nil at the GSP stadium.

The home side’s coach Kaiafas used a number of players with very little playing time so far; Oikonomides, Fylaktou and Demetriou. And the youngsters responded well to their call-up.

However it was the league’s top scorer Pote who got both goals, one in each half, the first a penalty and the second a powerful finish after being put through by Kirm.

Anorthosis had no problems in defeating bottom of the table Doxa Katokopias with Laifis, Abourdjiana (2) and Makris getting the goals.

In the last weekend game Othellos Athienou came back from a goal down to beat Ayia Napa with two goals from Tiago in the final minutes of the game. Kolokoudias had opened the score for the visitors early in the second half.

The league’s top scorer Pote got both goals for the home team netting one each half.
