Ballot papers ready for Paphos vote

THE ballot papers for the Paphos mayoral by-election of January 11, have been received, elections officer Yiannakis Mallourides said on Wednesday.

He added that he met with the eight candidates to inform them of the electoral procedure.
“I gave all candidates copies for the lists of all 30 poll centres, samples of valid and void ballot papers, but also other material that will help with the smooth conduct of the vote,” he said.

Mallourides added that votes will be counted at individual polling stations and the results will be faxed in to the returning officer’s office.

“The declaration of the mayor will be made in front of the Paphos district offices,” he said.

A record eight candidates will contest the seat after the position was vacated by DIKO’s Savvas Vergas who faces charges of corruption.

The contestants are Aristos Vasiliades, supported by DIKO, AKEL, and EDEK, DISY municipal councillor Phedonas Phedonos, Doros Paphitis, Andreas Masouras, Andreas Chrysanthou, Vangelos Mavronicolas, Sophie Hambiouridou, and Chrysanthos Chrysanthou.

Mallourides said the record number of candidates was a first for Cyprus, not just the town.
