A 34-year-old Cypriot man has been jailed for four years for trafficking 2.3 kilograms of cannabis.

Mehmet Bayramlar was caught at Larnaca airport after his arrival from Frankfurt just before midnight on September 22.

The Turkish Cypriot pleaded guilty to importing the drugs and possession with intent to supply.

The defendant said that while on holiday in Amsterdam, he had been approached by a friend from Germany who gave him the drugs to bring to Cyprus.

Bayramlar said someone was meant to be waiting for him at Larnaca airport holding a sign with his name on it.

He claimed he did not know who that person was and police efforts to track them down did not yield any results.

The court said it took into account the defendant’s clean criminal record and the fact that he had admitted the crime.
