Restaurant review: Makiso Sushi Bar, Limassol

By Stephanie Robb

The Old Town in Limassol has long been the place where traditional meets new. And while new restaurants pop up from time to time they tend to adopt a rustic, traditional feel to match the ambience of the area but the new kid on the block comes with a new taste. I’m referring to Makiso sushi bar, a modern bar offering something new, fresh and absolutely delicious. The sushi bar is a quaint, modern bar, ideal to host friends and intimate moments.

Limassol is not known for catering to those with a love of sushi. There are a few sushi bars, but nothing that is leaves a lasting memory with its customers. Makiso comes as a strong player as it offers the freshest sushi I have ever tasted, with the benefit of witnessing it being made right in front of you by a quiet, but delightful Asian chef.

Our meal started with a tuna and salmon sashimi which literally melted in the mouth. The fish was so tender, beyond anything I have tasted in Limassol. The fresh taste of the sashimi was a great way to prepare our pallets for the following sushi dishes. The best way to follow this was with the salmon and tuna nigiri. Having already seen how fresh the sashimi was, we were buzzing for what was to follow.

As we were informed the rice used for all sushi dishes is flown in from Asia and is rice which is specially designed for making sushi. It’s no lie that the sushi bar’s efforts to be as authentic and unique as possible is evident throughout your meal. The nigiri was an amazing follower to the mouthwatering sashimi, as the tender tuna and salmon made a perfect combination with the rice.
What was left to be tasted was the maki and choosing which to have made a daunting task as we were so pleased with what we have just already had that we wanted to devour a piece of everything. We started with the classic crowd favourite California Roll, known as the inside out roll as it hides the seaweed, wrapping the maki with an extra layer of rice. The California roll is made with avocado, cucumber and a crab stick. It was delightful and left us craving for more.

What we had pleasantly surprised us: the spicy tuna roll and spicy salmon roll. Being a fan of spicy dishes, the combination of the fresh tuna and salmon combined with the spicy sauce made the sushi one to remember and one that would ensure that we returned to Makiso wanting more.

All in all, Makiso is an affordable sushi restaurant that is open to everyone, especially the sushi lovers among us, or just those who really want to know why this sushi craze is still going strong. On your next visit to the old town don’t forget to make a reservation.
