New mosque in Ayios Sergios ‘unnecessary’

The derelict church of Ayios Sergios Vakhos

A SECOND mosque is to be constructed in Ayios Sergios village in the north on a plot where the Ayios Sergios Vakhos church is located, Turkish Cypriot press said on Wednesday.

Daily Afrika said the second mosque was being financed by the Turkish ‘embassy’ in the north, and questioned whether a second mosque in the same village was even necessary.

The Agios Sergios Vakhos church is currently being used as a cultural centre and despite repeated requests for it to be renovated, Afrika said the money had not been forthcoming, yet a new mosque was to be built there.

Also, under the title: “One flag in each hill and one mosque in each neighborhood,” the same newspaper condemned the construction of a second mosque and wondered why it was being built in the yard of a Greek Orthodox church.
