Woman dies in road accident

A 38-year-old woman died on Wednesday in Nicosia after she was hit by a car driven by an elderly man who was later tested for alcohol and found to be way above the legal limit.

The woman was trying to cross Tseriou Avenue in Strovolos with her son, 6, who was slightly injured, police said.

She was rushed to hospital where she died at 8.40 pm.

The driver of the vehicle, 73, underwent a breathalyzer test whose preliminary reading was 107 micrograms. The legal limit is 22.

The final test showed 65. The man has been detained, police said.

It was the second fatal accident on Tseriou Avenue involving an elderly driver.

Eleni Touloumi, 62, died last Friday after she was hit by a car driven by a 71-year-old man.
