Biometric ID cards being introduced

The Civil Registry and Migration Department said on Thursday that as of next Tuesday all new ID cards issued to Cypriot citizens would be biometric.

The change to the migration law would be published in the official government gazette on Friday, a statement said, allowing the move to go ahead.

The department said identity cards with biometric data would not be printed on the same day but would take five working days from the date of application for them to be ready.

Cypriots who already have current ID cards will not be required to replace them with a biometric version, it said.
