Cyprus star Marcos Baghdatis continued his good start to the season when he upset eighth seed David Goffin of Belgium in the first round at the Dubai Tennis Championships on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old from Limassol, who was given a wildcard by organisers, won 6-2 7-5 in one hour and 11 minutes and he will now face Croatia’s Borna Coric in the second round.
The Cypriot, now ranked 62, hit four aces and nine double faults, while the Belgian hit two aces and three double faults. Baghdatis won six break points, while his opponent converted three.
Andy Murray also moved into the second round with a straight-sets win over Gilles Muller.
The only slight blip for the new world number three came when he was broken the first time he served for the match but he quickly put it behind him to clinch a 6-4 7-5 victory in an hour and 45 minutes.
Murray next plays Portugal’s Joao Sousa, who he has beaten in straight sets in all four of their previous meetings, most recently at last month’s Australian Open.
