Cooking up a Mediterranean feast

By Maria Gregoriou

Next Friday and Saturday, chef George Kyprianou will be presenting a lecture and workshop on Mediterranean cuisine at the Droushia Heights hotel in Paphos, aimed at all of us who love to cook.

The chef will introduce us to some traditional specialties of the Cypriot kitchen, while allowing us to mingle and have a bit of chit-chat about cooking (who knows, maybe he will give up some of his cooking secrets).

For all those up for the cooking challenge, or rather, tasting challenge, you can check into the hotel at 2pm and get cleaned up before 6pm when you can have welcome drinks with the chef before the presentation and talk at 6.30pm, during which you will get to find out more about Saturday’s cooking workshop.
Friday comes to a close at 8pm with a buffet dinner.

Saturday stars early at 7.30am when we are all invited for a breakfast with a twist as the chef will be talking about local produce and the concept of a Cypriot breakfast.

Then we move on to 9.30am when you can get your Mediterranean cooking apron on during the workshop.

You can have a lunch break at 12.30, and try what you and the professional have made. Then there will be coffee and tea, and a serving of biscuits at 2pm to end the two events.

Kyprianou, from Nicosia, has a BSc degree in Culinary Arts and an MSc degree in Culinary Education from Middlesex University. He teaches Culinary Arts and is a well-known chef on the island.

He has been the Mission Chef of the Cyprus National Chef’s Olympic Team C.C.A for three years (from 2001 until 2004) and in 2006 was elected the Vice President of the Cyprus Chef Association, a position he held until 2011. The chef is also a member of the Master Chefs Association of Great Britain.

He has also written a cookbook with executive chef Andonis Nicolaou entitled Aroma and Colour in the Kitchen, just letting you know in case you want to do some research before you commit.

Guests are offered a special price of €70 per person during the two events, including one night’s accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis and all the eating and drinking and cooking mentioned above.
