Road campaign for child safety

REACTION Youth for Prevention on Tuesday announced a nationwide awareness campaign for the safe transportation of children in cooperation with Pan-European Youth Forum for Road Safety.

According to the head of REACTION Marios Stavrou more than 4,300 children are killed every year in the European Union as a result of road accidents. He said in Cyprus children were often being driven around without being strapped in, or they were being held by grandparents in their laps. The body is currently conducting surveys on the issue and will then submit its proposals to the relevant bodies, he told the Cyprus News Agency.

REACTION said legislation needed to be tightened for driver caught in such circumstances, suggesting an on-the-spot fine of €250 and the loss of four points, and for repeat offenders, the loss of licence.
