Mugging suspect arrested in Paphos

Police on Sunday arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with two incidents of mugging reported by two female British tourists at the Kato Paphos beachfront, it said in a statement.

According to the complaint filed by the two tourists, 61 and 84, at around 9pm and 11pm respectively on Sunday, while they were walking down Posidonos avenue in Paphos, a young man with his face covered grabbed their purses and fled the scene on foot.

Though neither contained money, one victim said her purse contained a mobile phone, while the other had been carrying a watch in hers.

Shortly after the complaint was filed, police spotted a 35-year-old man who matched the victims’ description.

Although he denied any involvement, the suspect was arrested and held in custody.

Following a search, the man was found to be carrying a knife with a 13-centimetre blade but not the victims’ possessions.
