The music of strings

By Maria Gregoriou

The musicians of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra will perform two chamber music concerts at the weekend in Nicosia and Paphos.

The trio who will be interpreting Johann Sebastian Bach’s monumental Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 in Sitkovetsky’s arrangement for string trio, are Wolfgang Schroeder on the violin, Sorin Alexandru Horlea on the viola, and Peter Gospodinov on the cello.

Bach wrote the Variations for keyboard instrument after a commission from the Russian ambassador to the Dresden court with the request “to be cheered up a little”.

The composer responded to this by composing a set of 30 variations with a range of styles, forms and emotions.

This deeply humanistic music speaks to us even more powerfully in today’s troubled times. Join these concerts to enjoy its marvels!
